Online Psychiatry FAQs
Getting Started & Appointments
Learn more about what to expect when starting care, appointment availability, visit length & frequency, and how to prepare.
Online psychiatry allows you to meet with your psychiatric provider by secure video from a private location. We provide virtual psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and supportive therapy, so you can receive care without traveling to an office.
Availability varies, but we aim to make getting started as quick and easy as possible. Once insurance coverage is verified (if applicable) and a card is securely on file, appointments may be available within 2 weeks.
Yes. We primarily offer morning and early-afternoon appointments between 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., including Saturdays and Sundays.
On select days, appointments may begin as early as 5:00 a.m.
Our early-morning and weekend availability can be especially convenient for healthcare professionals and others who work long or nontraditional shifts. Availability varies by provider and appointment type.
Initial psychiatric evaluations are typically 90 minutes.
Follow-up appointments are flexible and generally range from 30–60 minutes, although they may be shorter or longer depending on what you need. How often we meet can also change over time — from more frequent visits during medication changes or periods when you need additional support to biweekly, monthly or every few months when things are more stable.
There is no one-size-fits-all schedule. We’ll adjust the length and frequency of appointments together based on your needs, treatment, and preferences.
To prepare for our first appointment, please:
- Complete all intake forms at least 24 hours before your appointment
- Choose a private, quiet space with reliable internet for your session
- Consider what you hope to get out of our time together
- Bring any mental health or medical records you’d like us to review
Your initial evaluation lasts about 90 minutes and gives us time to explore your mental health history, symptoms, goals, and any previous treatments you’ve tried. By the end of the session, we’ll discuss your diagnosis (if applicable), outline your treatment plan, and talk through medication options if appropriate.
Medications & Ongoing Care
Learn more about medication management, ADHD treatment, supportive therapy, refills, and ongoing psychiatric care.
Yes. When medication is appropriate, our providers can prescribe and manage psychiatric medications through telehealth. Treatment decisions are made collaboratively based on your symptoms, history, goals, and individual needs.
Yes. We evaluate and treat ADHD and can prescribe ADHD medications when clinically appropriate. Medication recommendations are individualized and may include stimulant or non-stimulant options.
No. An evaluation does not commit you to taking medication. We’ll talk through your concerns, preferences, and options together so you can make an informed decision about what feels right for you.
Yes. When clinically appropriate, we can help with documentation for FMLA or other medical leave, workplace accommodations, and school accommodations.
Because these forms require us to understand your symptoms, functioning, treatment needs, and how your condition is affecting work or school, we require at least two appointments before completing accommodation or leave documentation. This gives us time to conduct an appropriate evaluation and make recommendations we can clinically support.
Documentation is considered on an individual basis and cannot be guaranteed solely by completing two appointments.
Yes. Supportive psychotherapy can be incorporated into medication-management visits when helpful. We also consider lifestyle and integrative strategies as part of our whole-person approach to mental health care.
Please request refills at least 5 business days before you run out of medication whenever possible. Refills are provided for medications prescribed through Wanderlust Psychiatry and may require a follow-up appointment, particularly for new medications, medication changes, or when it has been some time since your last visit.
We generally ask patients receiving medication management to be seen at least every three months, although many patients meet with us more frequently depending on their medication, symptoms, and individual needs.
Insurance, Billing & Policies
Learn about your options for insurance, private pay and out-of-network reimbursement, along with payment, cancellation, and paperwork policies.
We understand that plans change. We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice whenever possible if you need to cancel or reschedule.
For follow-up appointments, your first late cancellation or missed appointment is waived. After that, a $50 fee may apply. Initial psychiatric evaluations canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice may be subject to a $125 fee.
Yes. We require a valid card on file for all patients, including those using insurance or out-of-network benefits. Your card may be used for applicable copays, deductibles, coinsurance, private-pay services, or other patient-responsibility balances.
Yes. You’re welcome to see us without using insurance. Private-pay options are available for initial evaluations and ongoing care, with transparent pricing provided before your appointment.
Insurance eligibility often can be confirmed within a few days, although timing varies by insurance plan. For patients scheduling through Headway, insurance information is submitted through their platform for verification.
We recommend waiting until your insurance information and expected costs have been confirmed before your first appointment. If you’re having difficulty verifying your coverage, you’re welcome to contact us.
We can provide a superbill after each session. A superbill is a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you may be reimbursed for part of your visit. Reimbursement depends on your individual insurance plan. Many of our out-of-network clients are reimbursed 60–80% of the cost, especially after they’ve met their deductible.
